Almost nothing in this sport involves money, which is exactly why this one is notable: it is an actual trade. Animals for animals, both directions, publicly stated.
Indonesia is loaning one male and one female Komodo dragon to a zoo in Shizuoka Prefecture for a breeding programme, and its ministry has said it will receive red pandas and giraffes in return. That is a two-for-several across three species, and it is the clearest modern example of animals-as-diplomacy outside the panda system.
It also shows what happens when one party has a monopoly on the asset. Komodo dragons come from Indonesia. If you want them, you deal with Indonesia, and Indonesia sets the terms.
